"I am an internist and pediatrician with many interests. I see adults, children, adolescents– the entire age range from newborns to the elderly. I believe that the doctor-patient relationship is a partnership, in which we can form lasting relationships with mutual respect and goal-setting. I enjoy laughing with my patients, and keeping up to date on each other’s lives, and when necessary we can cry together as well. I have been a physician for more than 2 decades, but I still learn things from my patients every day. At the medical school, I do research on assessing and improving communication: I tell people that my job is to get doctors to do a better job of explaining things to people! I volunteer for Wisconsin’s newborn screening program, and teach in the Medical Humanities program. I have a daughter in college and two sons in high school. "

Biography

I grew up in Madison, but attended medical training in St. Louis and Ann Arbor. I work in both hospital and outpatient settings, and was on the faculty at Yale before coming back to live in Wisconsin. I was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar, which is a kind of research fellowship. I spend much of my time doing research and teaching at the medical school, but I feel very strongly that I need to keep in touch with my patient's needs. My research is in the area of doctor-patient communication, but I also do work in newborn screening, genetics, bioethics, and health services research.
